What You’ll Do
\n\n
As a City Year AmeriCorps member, your service will focus on coaching and
\n\n
mentoring elementary, middle and/or high school students. You will help these
\n\n
students earn academic success, improve their attendance, and develop positive
\n\n
behaviors at school. You will plan and monitor individual student progress and
\n\n
work with teachers on whole class instruction, breakout spaces and other in-class
\n\n
student assistance.
\n\n
Role and Responsibilities
\n\n
Experience in all these tasks is not necessary. We provide 2-4 weeks of training at
\n\n
the beginning of the year to support you. Plus, you will work with partner teachers
\n\n
and school staff every step of the way.
\n\n
Support academic coaching and interpersonal development for students:
\n\n
· Work with identified students 1:1 and in small groups
\n\n
· Develop literacy and/or math skills varying learning activities by student level,
\n\n
answering student questions and encouraging assignment completion
\n\n
· Create and implement a behavior management system for students
\n\n
· Develop interpersonal skills throughout their day, using proven strategies of
\n\n
learning, practicing, reflection and repetition
\n\n
· Collaborate with teachers and team members to collect, record, analyze and
\n\n
monitor individual student progress, participating in facilitated reviews of student
\n\n
data collected and entered into City Year’s student data system· Create an engaging, safe and healthy classroom space in collaboration with the teacher
\n\n
Support Whole School initiatives to increase engagement with students and
\n\n
families:
\n\n
· Support and/or conduct extended day and virtual programming for students
\n\n
before, during and after school including, but not limited to, academic enrichment
\n\n
and intervention, homework support, recreation and student clubs, service
\n\n
learning, and leadership development
\n\n
· Create, support and/or co-lead events or programs that recognize and appreciate
\n\n
student growth and/or achievement in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior
\n\n

General Summary: The English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor will teach courses within the ESL Programs. The instructor will be responsible for planning and delivering ESL curriculum. Along with the classroom hours, there will be a strong focus on using a learning management system and collaborative learning.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
<ul>
<li>Teach courses in Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced ESL up to 27.5 hours per week</li>
<li>
Prepare and submit lesson plans prior to each course session
</li>
<li>
Grade and provide feedback on student work in a timely manner
</li>
<li>
Evaluate and monitor students’ progress the use of various assessment tools
</li>
<li>
Deliver engaging instruction through a variety of student-centered classroom activities
</li>
<li>
Maintain necessary records to report student academic progress (SAP) to the Academic Dean/Program Manager
</li>

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education and Experience: The position requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in ESL/EFL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics or Linguistics (or related field). At least two years of prior teaching experience to adult learners preferred.
If the Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree is not in ESL/EFL, TESOL, Applied Linguistics or Linguistics (or related field), language teaching faculty must have a specific knowledge base and skill set that includes the following:

If the degree is not in business administration or a directly related field, candidates with at least two years of related work experience or evidence of specialized training related to the field and industry may be considered.
