Your Impact:
As a Horticulture Assistant, you’ll have the unique opportunity to contribute to two historic public gardens on the North Shore, each with their own distinct character. While at Stevens-Coolidge House &amp; Gardens, you may find yourself harvesting heirloom vegetables from the walled potager garden or weeding beautiful new entry gardens. At The Crane Estate, you may be training clematis along the walled Formal Garden or working with perennials in the garden border. With a striking variety of gardens to look after, every day will bring something exciting and different! Stevens-Coolidge House and Gardens is a historic 91-acre property with gardens including a potager garden, formal cutting garden, Italianate rose garden, perennial garden, orchard, meadows and the newly created Entry Garden composed of a mix of introduced and native pollinator friendly plantings, the greenhouse complex, and nursery. 
The Crane Estate is a 2,000-acre Country Place Era estate with a historic mansion and complimentary gardens built between 1909 and 1928. Cultivated gardens surround the mansion, garden beds surround an inn located on the property and, in addition, there is a greenhouse, a cutting garden and a holding area. 
The Role:
As Horticulture Assistant, you will conduct horticultural tasks in garden areas on the properties, greenhouse complex, and landscapes. You’ll work side by side with the site Horticulturist for these spaces, as well as with volunteers and other property staff. This position is a full-time role suited to a skilled professional gardener with an energetic, positive personality and strong work ethic. You will share your time between Stevens-Coolidge in North Andover and The Crane Estate in Ipswich and will report to each on-site Horticulturist. You will bring your professional fine-gardening skill and experience, passion for plants, attention to detail, and a positive, collaborative nature. You will work independently and as part of a team. 
Specifically, you’ll:

This is a full-time, Monday through Friday, first-shift position, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. As a Cultivation Technician 1, you will support the cultivation department by performing essential tasks that keep the operation running smoothly. You will also assist with irrigation and fertigation, fill nutrient stock tanks, process plant waste, and apply biological control agents and pesticides, all while adhering to company and state policies. Daily room checks and plant health assessments will be a key part of your role, and you'll report any signs of pests, diseases, or health issues to your supervisors. Keeping your workspace clean, sanitized, and organized is vital, as is reporting any faulty equipment to the team.

The Climber is responsible for climbing, pruning, and removing trees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
<ul>
<li>Always follow and help enforce safe practices and rules</li>
<li>Climb, prune, and remove trees according to Foreperson’s directives</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Load and unload trucks with logs, brush, and debris; lifts and feeds brush into brush chipper.</li>
<li>Work from the ground using hand saws, pole saws, pruners, hand pruners, loppers, and gas-powered chain saws</li>
<li>Inspect and ensure proper working condition of all assigned tools and equipment</li>
<li>Safeguard employees and public from hazards in and around the work area by enforcing safe job practices, keeping work area clean and orderly, and staying in frequent voice communication with co-workers</li>
<li>Perform duties for storm work as needed</li>

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Prior experience in electric utility vegetation management, construction, logging, landscaping, mechanical, or military industries preferred; previous climbing experience is preferred
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or education equivalent preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
<ul>
<li>Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of all knots, ropes, and rigging devices used in tree trimming and removal operations</li>
<li>Must be able to climb and descend trees using rope and safety saddle</li>
<li>Must be able to administer and implement emergency rescue techniques, including tree rescue and all applicable first aid techniques</li>
<li>Must be familiar with electrical hazards and appropriate operating procedure when in proximity to electrical conductors and aerial rescue techniques in the event of an emergency aloft</li>
<li>Must be able to work and maneuver at considerable heights under varying and adverse weather conditions</li>
<li>Must possess physical strength and agility, good balance, good depth perception and the ability to hear verbal instructions from a distance.</li>
<li>Must be able to quickly remove yourself from a potential danger area</li>
<li>Must be able to obtain and maintain first-aid certification and CPR</li>
<li>Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE)</li>
<li>Must be able to travel out of town for storm restoration work when needed</li>
