In 2025-2026, our community will include 700 students in grades 6-12, nearly 500 alumni, over 150 faculty members, and hundreds of families. As a Middle School Principal You believe in creating an educational experience where students are able to see themselves reflected in the content of your class.The primary responsibilities of the MS Principal are organized into several big buckets, including: vision and strategy; Curriculum and Instruction; Assessment; School Culture; Student Support; Team Development and Coaching; Data Management and Analysis; Professional Development; Community Engagement; Compliance and Accountability; and Professional Growth. Key Responsibilities of the Role: The Big PictureThe Middle School Principal collaborates with the CAO, Assistant Principal, Deans of Curriculum and Instruction, and the Dean of Special Education, to provide feedback and support to faculty to become impactful educators and effective drivers of students outcomes.Serve as a thought partner for the Middle School Team and other members of the extended Middle School and Boston Prep Leadership team.The Middle School Principal serves as a go to resource for faculty on all student, family, and Middle school topics.The Middle School Principal facilitates initiatives to support academic achievement and ethical growth; and works across teams to create specific plans for students in accordance with a tiered system of support across grade levels, health and counseling, and advisory programming. The Middle School Principal collaborates to create the vision for routines and practices that promote excellence both inside and outside of classrooms. The Middle School Principal then ensures these routines and practices are executed with fidelity. The Middle School Principal collaborates to ensure the Code of Conduct is clear and consistently followed.The Middle School Principal works to improve and enhance existing programs, determine when, where, why, and how to differentiate existing offerings while introducing new ones. The Middle School Principal creates a model for rapid improvement of outcomes by developing and executing a short- and long-term strategy to reach academic, ethical, and cultural goals, utilizing data, professional development and other tools to empower teachers and promote high levels of achievement for all students.Demonstrates flexibility and commitment to the school's mission by undertaking additional responsibilities and contributing to school-wide initiatives as needed, even when not explicitly outlined in the job description, to support the overall success of the school community. Primary Responsibilities: Vision and StrategyActively participate in meetings, workshops, and conferences that involve decisions affecting the district and/or the school. Advocate for the schools needs by providing input to the decision-making process of the district. Respect, support, and implement decisions once made, and act to ensure that staff are equally supportive.Uphold Boston Prep staff expectations, via walkthroughs, one-on-one coaching and facilitation of Professional Development sessions. This may also include the management of multiple staff members, as needed.Plan and facilitate school level leadership meetings, including partnership with instructional teams to assess progress toward attainment of goals, creating action steps accordingly.Partner with the key instructional stakeholders (i.e. CAO, DCIs, Department Chairs, and fellow Assistant Principal) to identify instructional trends and set action plans, as needed.Analyze, share and interpret internal and external school assessments (i.e. interim assessments, MCAS, Star Reading, iReady etc.), ensuring data is used strategically to improve student performanceRespond to data collected via whole school and individual class observations by drafting support plans and PD plans, in collaboration with the the MSLTSupport the maintenance and revision of school policies outlined in our Student and Family Handbook.Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating staff. The principal shall delegate duties and responsibilities to the assistant principal and other members of the staff under the principal's supervision, as the principal deems necessary, to affect the optimum function of the school. Curriculum and InstructionEnsure the taught curriculum is aligned with the written curriculum, grounded in grade level work and mastery aligned to state standards, via lesson plan reviews and classroom walkthroughsTeach up to one section of middle school Ethics AssessmentEnsure school staff receive test administrator training as required by DESE, College Board, WIDA, etc. School CultureResponsible for the safety and administration of the school facilities including any safety-related drills and procedures.Support with investigations of items related to the Code of Conduct, up to and including those that may require suspensions. Partner with school leaders where appropriate and manage all communication and follow-ups with students, faculty, and families including required documentation.Plan and attend key whole-school and cross-school events both during and after school hours to make connections to engage students inside and outside Boston Prep (i.e Back to School Night, Report Card conferences, student joy events, etc.)Communicate regularly via public spaces (Community Meeting) to promote and align to the school mission.Duties including but not limited to supervising lunch periods, managing swipe and front desk duties, and covering classes in the absence of other staff members.Model and monitor the use of key communication structures (i.e. Deans List, PowerSchool, Smore, etc.) by all members of the Middle School team.As required, conduct investigations of items related to the Code of Conduct, particularly for more serious disciplinary consequences, including long-term suspension and expulsionOn a consistent basis, review and analyze discipline data and communicate results to important stakeholders (i.e. in check-ins with principal, in grade levels, with students and families, to teachers, etc.)Participate in school academic, athletic, and co-curricular activities to supervise and support all students beyond the school day. Student SupportParticipate as a key member of the MTSS Team to design student interventions by partnering with the Health and Counseling team, teachers, students, and families to identify students requiring plans, to create and implement individual intervention plans; proactively communicate the plans and provide regular updates.Ensure students are on-time and in attendance at school; supervise daily attendance procedures, conduct necessary family follow-up inside and outside of Boston Prep, and monitor and take action related to truancy Team Development and CoachingObserve MSLT Members in action (i.e. leading department meetings; instructional coaching; PD facilitation, etc) to provide actionable feedback during coachingProvide weekly coaching to the Assistant Principal and Deans of Curriculum and Instruction, in alignment with district priorities; document coaching according to district protocolMaintain a coaching caseload of up to 3 teachers, focused on weekly observation and feedback or weekly data meetings, aligned to districts coaching model Data Management and AnalysisDevelop and implement walkthrough protocols to monitor key culture routines and instructional strategies; share and analyze data with MSLT and teachersMaintain a laser focus on organizational goals and associated metrics; monitor progress toward metrics, adjust plans as needed, and develop communication plans around the data that inspire teachers and students alikePrepare for and co-facilitate periodic walkthroughs and data chats with MSLT and Chief Academic OfficerUsing TeachBoost and/or other data tracking systems, monitor the impact of professional development via observation ratings and feedback Professional Development Attend summer Leadership Academy to prepare for the upcoming school yearPlan, lead, and facilitate key orientation sessions for new and returning middle school team members, in alignment with district priorities and strategiesPlan, lead, and facilitate school-based professional learning sessions, in accordance with the districts PD calendar Community EngagementLead school team through annual strategic planning processCollaborate with the Family Manager on initiatives, suggestions, and concerns from parents and familiesPrepare for and facilitate monthly Family Town Hall Compliance and AccountabilityAdhere to all school policies, procedures, and state regulations, including maintaining accurate records and preparing required reports.Respond to PRS complaints filed through DESE Management/SupervisionCreate a professional environment by assuring that interactions with others in the school, community, and School Committee are conducted with utmost respect and professionalism.Directly supervise the Middle School Leadership Team (Assistant Principal, Deans of Curriculum and Instruction) and provide dotted line supervision to the extended MSLT (Dean of Operations, Dean of Support Services)Monitor staff attendance and schedule attendance meetings in accordance with school policyWrite and implement performance improvement plans for staff members who consistently do not meet expectationsIn consultation with HR, investigate allegations of staff misconduct; hold investigatory meetings; issue investigation outcomesMediate staff conflictsFollow the steps in the annual performance management cycle for all direct reports; ensure all other school-based managers adhere to the annual performance management cycle Professional GrowthConsistently model and practice key leadership routines to stay sharp, including but not limited to: observation/feedback coaching; weekly data meetings; professional development design and facilitationParticipate in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance leadership skills and stay current with educational best practices. Qualifications: Experience:3-5 years of previous teaching experience. In a charter school setting is a plus. Experience with diverse student populations and inclusive education practices is a plus.Prior Leadership experience in a school setting required; 2+ years in an Assistant Principal/Principal Role (preferred)Education:A bachelors degree in education or a related field is required.
