Job Summary: Performs a variety of technical (including EKG, EEG and Phlebotomy), clerical and communicative tasks for the effective operation of the Medical Clinic.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Six months to one year patient contact experience required.
- National Phlebotomist certification required.
- Training in CPI required, Brattleboro Retreat will Provide
- Must have valid driver's license without any record of motor vehicle violations or convictions limiting driving privileges
- CPR certification required
- One year on the job experience for phlebotomy, to be approved by the Brattleboro Retreat’s Neurologist consultant.
- Clerical Experience preferred
- Organized and flexible; ability to set priorities and multitask.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Core Competencies
Performs correct venipuncture of patients and staff to ensure the accurate collection of specimens as ordered by staff M.D./N.P. and as per Personnel policy for staff screening
Performs electrocardiograms on patients as ordered per staff M.D./N.P. ensuring accurate and consistent techniques
Prepares all lab specimens in a timely manner for safe transport to BMH lab. Obtains results from laboratory on the Internet/telephone for M.D. /N.P./ unit staff as necessary.
Keeps accurate files of all types of records housed in the clinic, correctly maintaining different systems of filing and retrieving. Transfers immunization records on Adolescent patients to Retreat Form for Infection Control Dept.
Maintains employee health files and enters appropriate data into computer.
Xeroxes records and forms according to procedure standards ensuring quality copies. Tracks Medical Clinic inventory and orders supplies as needed.
Sorts and sends lab, EKG, medical consults, other forms, test results, and copies to appropriate department/units in a timely fashion, as necessary, ensuring rapid delivery of information to appropriate persons for efficient care decisions.
Schedules appointments on AVATAR Scheduler for M.D. consultants and N.P.'s, and X-Ray ensuring timely, appropriate care and attention for patients and staff. Organizes and monitors the flow of the Clinic workload.
Maintains flexibility based on clinic needs.
Transmits Clinic daily schedule to each patient care unit in a timely manner. Edits schedule as needed and enters pertinent data after clinic visit.
Triages telephone call and conveys unit needs/concerns to N.P.
Assists with triage of patients insuring that compromised patients receive appropriate care quickly.
Relays test results and messages to the appropriate people following established Retreat polices as requested, ensuring effective communication and confidentiality.

Mentoring
Oversees department based orientation and mentorship of new staff. Trains and credentials new phlebotomists on the
staff, ensuring consistent high standards of technique and procedure. Provides input to performance evaluations
Provides education to others, both formally and informally
Optimizes staff strengths/weaknesses taking into account the broader clinical picture of patients and their needs
