Northern Nurseries is seeking motivated candidates to join our Manager in Training Program across our high-volume landscape supply and horticultural distribution locations.
As a Manager in Training, you’ll gain hands-on experience in daily operations, staff leadership, and customer service across multiple sites. You’ll work closely with experienced managers to develop the skills needed to oversee workflow, support sales growth, and foster a positive, service-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
•Learn to lead and support nursery and yard teams, promoting safety, teamwork, and accountability.
•Assist with recruiting, training, and mentoring staff to deliver excellent customer service.
•Participate in leadership development activities to prepare for future management roles.
Operations & Process Management
•Support daily site operations including inventory management, product flow, and merchandising.
•Assist with maintaining accurate inventory through cycle counts and reporting.
•Learn to monitor expenses and productivity to achieve efficiency and profitability goals.
•Help ensure products are well maintained, properly labeled, and attractively displayed.
Sales & Customer Experience
•Engage with customers to provide knowledgeable service and resolve concerns.
•Support sales initiatives through product presentation and quotations.
•Collaborate with internal departments to align sales, delivery, and service operations.
Safety, Compliance & Communication
•Learn and enforce company and industry safety standards.
•Communicate effectively with leadership teams regarding operations and staffing.
•Assist in reporting and addressing operational or security concerns.
Requirements:
Qualifications
•1–3 years of experience in horticulture, nursery operations, garden center work, or related fields preferred.
•Strong interest in developing plant knowledge (trees, shrubs, perennials) and understanding nursery/landscape supply operations.
•Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and take initiative.
•Proficiency in Microsoft Office and POS systems a plus.
•Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
•Experience with forklifts, pallet jacks, or similar equipment preferred but not required (training provided).
Physical & Schedule Requirements
•Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. (team-lift for heavier loads).
•Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
•Able to stand, bend, or walk for extended periods.
•Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak season.
