JOB SUMMARY/OBJECTIVES:
The Medical Assistant (MA) at plays a vital role in providing high-quality, patient-centered care to a diverse population. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed psychiatric Physician or Nurse Practitioner, the Medical Assistant provides care, patient education, and provide support for all BHWC clinicians and Psychiatric Team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Clinical Support:
- Patient Preparation: Escort patients to examination rooms; accurately measure and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height, weight); document chief complaint and brief medical history as per protocol.
- Assisting Providers: Prepare patients and assist providers (Physicians, NPs, PAs) during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Specimen Collection & Processing: Collect and label various specimens (e.g., urine and saliva) accurately and efficiently, adhering to proper aseptic techniques and laboratory protocols. Prepare specimens for transport as required.
- Supply Management: Monitor and maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment, ensuring exam rooms are stocked and clean.
- Infection Control: Adhere strictly to infection control policies and procedures, including hand hygiene, sterilization of instruments, and proper disposal of biohazardous waste.
Administrative Support:
- Appointment Management: Schedule, reschedule, and confirm patient appointments using the electronic health record (EHR) system. Manage patient flow efficiently to minimize wait times.
- Electronic Health Record (EHR) Documentation: Accurately and thoroughly document all patient interactions, clinical observations, procedures, and communications in the EHR in a timely manner.
- Patient Education: Provide patients with clear and concise instructions regarding medications, treatment plans, follow-up care, and health education materials as directed by the provider.
- Clerical Duties: Perform general clerical duties such as faxing, scanning, photocopying, and managing patient forms.
New Patient Intake:
- Support: Reach out to new patients and offer an appointment to review and assist with paperwork prior to the first appointment.
- Follow up: on any releases not received in a timely manner.
Controlled substance prescription monitoring:
- VPMS access: for all new patients and current psychiatric patients who are prescribed CNS stimulants or benzodiazepines.
- Screening: Complete drug screens as appropriate and enter order and results in EMR.
- Verification: Complete patient pill counts as requested by psychiatric practitioners.
Compliance & Professionalism:
- HIPAA Compliance: Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient health information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Safety Standards: Adhere to all clinic safety policies and procedures.
- Professionalism: Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
- Continuous Learning: Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to maintain certification/licensure and enhance skills.
