Aquinas Consulting is currently looking to fill a Controls and Automation Engineer job for our direct client. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and supporting automated systems used to move, handle, and inspect subsea fiber cable in cable handling and assembly operations. You will support major automation initiatives, including autonomous cable loading, automated pan connection systems, and defect detection during operations. This position requires flexibility to work any shift to support critical manufacturing needs.

Controls and Automation Engineer job Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain PLC-, industrial PC-, and robot-controlled automation systems
  • Integrate motion control hardware including servos, gantries, and position feedback devices
  • Support machine vision–based inspection and alignment systems
  • Perform troubleshooting and corrective action on control-related issues
  • Develop and validate safety-critical controls logic, including interlocks and fail-safes
  • Lead commissioning and acceptance testing of new automated equipment
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering on fixtures, guarding, and risk reduction
  • Analyze downtime data and implement preventive improvements
  • Create and maintain documentation including wiring diagrams and PLC archives
  • Update procedure manuals to reflect automation improvements
  • Train operators and technicians on automated equipment and troubleshooting
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities to enhance throughput and reduce operator dependency
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of automation or motion control experience may be considered in lieu of degree
  • Strong PLC and motion control programming experience (Allen-Bradley or equivalent)
  • Experience integrating cameras and sensors into automated systems
  • Knowledge of industrial networking, safety system design, and mechanical interfaces
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Good computer proficiency, including data acquisition and documentation tools
  • Willingness and ability to work any shift to support production
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting up to 40 lbs., climbing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces
