A Patient Guide to Hair Transplants at My Hair UK Liverpool Clinic
As a doctor practising in hair restoration, I’ve met hundreds of patients who arrive at their consultation unsure what to expect. Some come with detailed research; others bring anxiety, often due to poor experiences elsewhere or misinformation online. At My Hair UK’s clinics, we prioritise clarity, safety, and evidence-based medical practice. This guide is written to offer you a transparent, medically informed view of what to expect before, during and after your FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant surgery.
Let’s start with a fundamental point: not everyone is a suitable candidate for hair transplant surgery. Your candidacy depends on factors like donor area density, hair type, age, family history of hair loss, and the extent of balding. We also need to assess scalp health, prior procedures (if any), and realistic goals. The process isn’t cosmetic in the same way as fillers or Botox. This is a surgical procedure with anatomical, vascular and immunological implications that we take seriously. That’s why the consultation at our Liverpool site is always with a qualified doctor who has direct surgical experience—not a sales advisor or technician.
During your consultation, we’ll discuss your goals in detail, then examine your scalp thoroughly under magnification. We assess donor capacity, balding pattern, and miniaturisation extent. We consider the role of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your hair loss, especially if you're under 35 or showing signs of early thinning. While DHT blockers like finasteride are an option for men, they must be prescribed carefully and monitored for side effects. A detailed discussion about your medical history helps determine whether surgery is the most appropriate option at this time. If your hair loss is ongoing and unmedicated, we may suggest postponing surgery and starting pharmacological treatment first. This decision is grounded in evidence: research has shown that patients on finasteride tend to have better transplant outcomes due to stabilised loss rates.
At My Hair UK Liverpool hair transplant centre, we perform only FUE procedures. We do not use robotic methods or strip harvesting techniques. FUE involves extracting individual follicular units using a micro punch, typically 0.8–1.0mm in diameter. These units are then manually implanted into areas of thinning or balding. The artistry lies in the angle, depth, and density of placement, which must mimic the natural direction of hair growth. In most cases, we perform the procedure under local anaesthetic in one day, although very large cases may require two sessions.
Pricing is fixed and transparent. A procedure of up to 1,000 grafts (around 2,000 hairs) costs £2,899. This might be suitable for frontal reinforcement or mild crown work. For patients needing more extensive coverage, 2,000 grafts cost £3,699 and 3,000 grafts are priced at £4,499. Unlike many overseas clinics, we do not charge per graft or pressure patients into larger sessions than they need. Our focus is medical safety and long-term results, not volume.
Aftercare is just as important as surgery. You’ll receive detailed instructions on washing, sleeping posture, and physical activity. Swelling in the forehead and around the eyes is common in the first 72 hours, and scabbing peaks at around day 5. Most grafts shed within three weeks—this is a normal part of the anagen-to-telogen shift. Regrowth typically starts from the third month, with full cosmetic results visible at 12 months.
Many patients ask whether they need to see their GP before booking. The answer is yes—particularly if you have underlying health conditions, take regular medications, or are over 40. A full blood pressure and cardiovascular screen is good practice before elective surgery. Your GP can also perform basic blood tests, such as full blood count and clotting profile, which may be relevant if there’s any history of bleeding disorders or medication use (e.g. aspirin, warfarin, SSRIs). If you're based in Liverpool, three nearby GP practices we can recommend for a general health check include:
St James Health Centre, 29 Great George St, Liverpool L1 5DZ
Brownlow Health @ Ropewalks, 26 Argyle St, Liverpool L1 5DL
Rocky Lane Medical Centre, 80 Rocky Ln, Childwall, Liverpool L16 1JD
During your consultation, we may also discuss the option of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injections post-surgery. This adjunctive treatment may improve graft survival and promote native hair regrowth, although clinical evidence remains mixed. A systematic review in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (2019) noted improved hair density in some PRP-treated patients, but further high-quality trials are needed.
Choosing to have a hair transplant is a significant decision. At My Hair UK Liverpool, we believe in taking a slow, measured, medically-led approach. That includes honest conversations about expectations, the possibility of future surgeries, and the need for long-term maintenance. For some, a single session offers permanent satisfaction. For others with progressive loss or limited donor availability, it becomes part of a broader management plan.
Hair loss can be emotionally challenging, but surgery should never be rushed. If you’re considering a transplant, begin by having that health check with your GP. Then come in for a consultation with us. We’ll assess your suitability carefully and walk you through the options based on evidence—not sales targets.
