POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Think Tank is a woman-owned small business with more than 27 years of proven success delivering exceptional marine and fisheries services to the federal government. We are currently seeking an ideal candidate for the position of Visual Observer to support an upcoming proposal with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Résumé of successful candidate(s) will be included with our proposal.

The Visual Observer supports marine mammal and sea turtle research by participating in shipboard, aerial, and small boat surveys. This role involves species identification, behavioral observations, and accurate data recording to support population assessments and management decisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Visually identify and record pinniped and marine species/mammals, sea turtles, etc.
  • Conduct visual surveys from ships, aircraft, or alternative platforms to identify and record marine mammals and sea turtles.
  • Document group size, behavior, environmental conditions, and location using standardized data collection methods.
  • Assist in photo-identification, biopsy collection, and tagging operations when needed.
  • Maintain survey logs, datasheets, and GPS records accurately.
  • Follow safety protocols during field operations, including on vessels and aircraft.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree in biology or marine science
  • Provide any required medical clearance and safety training certificates before research activities.
  • Pass a Government provided test that demonstrates the level of species identification skills appropriate to the level of observer.
  • Corrected 20/20 vision.
  • Capability to work inside a small plane for periods of up to 6 hours at a time.
  • Possess a valid personal passport where the expiration date is at least six (6) months after the ultimate completion date of the task order.
  • Be able to stay at hotels for up to eight (8) weeks at a time.
  • Have previous experience with entering data into a computerized data entry program while at sea on a ship or in an aerial survey.
  • Experience conducting field-based wildlife observations, especially marine species.
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors in variable conditions, including at sea or in the air.
  • Strong visual acuity and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with data entry tools and field data protocols.
